SanDiegoStory.com Writers Win 4 Press Club Awards

Writers contributing to SanDiegoStory.com received 4 awards last night at the 40th Annual San Diego Press Club Awards at Joe & Vi Jacobs Center at Market Creek in Emerald Hills near the intersection of Interstate 805 and Highway 94.  The writers scored one 3rd place, one 2nd place and one 1st place prize in the “Daily Newspaper or Website” master category competing against much larger local publishers like U-T San Diego and the San Diego Daily Transcript.  The judging for all of the works is not done by anyone in San Diego, but by press clubs in other cities.  The San Diego Press Club participates in judging entries for other cities.  Contributions are judged without revealing the writer’s name or affiliation.

The club awarded 420 prizes including special awards to Rory Devine, morning news anchor for the San Diego NBC affiliate who received the Harold Keen Award for Outstanding Contribution to Journalism; Mark Putnam, a communications consultant, who received the Andy Mace Award for Outstanding Contribution to Public Relations; and Kent Davy, former editor the North County Times, who received the Jim Reiman Award for Enlightened Media Management.

Competing in 3 of the 29 subcategories for “Daily Newspaper or Website”, SanDiegoStory writer awards included a 2nd place for “Arts and Entertainment Reporting” by dance critic (and co-owner of Critics LLC, publisher of SanDiegoStory.com) Kris Eitland; a third place finish in “Essay/Commentary/Opinion” for Bill Eadie, president of the San Diego State Faculty Senate and another co-owner of Critics LLC; a 2nd place in “Arts & Entertainment” for Ken Herman, A classically trained pianist, organist and choral conductor and 3rd of the five owners of Critics LLC; while fellow critic Kris Eitland scored a first place in that category – one of the 44 first places awarded overall last night.  Welton Jones, former Critic at Large for the San Diego Union-Tribune and Mark Burgess who acts as Publisher for SanDiegoStory.com round out the ownership of Critics LLC.

Writers for SanDiegoStory.com who contribute to other publications also won awards last night.  Bill Eadie tied for 3rd place in “Reviews; Arts & Entertainment” for his piece written for TalkinBroadway.com “Other Desert Cities”; Kris Eitland – who also serves on the Press Club board as First Vice-President, won a third place ribbon for a piece she wrote for ArtPulse.org “Summer Dance Intensives in San Diego: Where dancers can shadow a Limon Doppelganger and other inspiring artists.” and David Dixon, Entertainment Editor for SDSU’s college newspaper, The Daily Aztec, won 1 of the 11 first prizes awarded to “College Media” in the “Reviews” category for his piece “The Brothers Size’ is a powerfully written drama” in the Daily Aztec” also taking the 3rd place in that category for his piece for the Aztec “Cygnet’s Assassins is a delightfully dark production.”

krisawardReferring to her first place win in the category “Daily Newspaper or Website: Reviews: Arts & Entertainment” for her review entitled “The Mystery of Elle at Les Girls: A Waste of Talent, Parody and Opportunity” written for SanDiegoStory.com, Kris Eitland said “I’m thrilled I was  given a first place for a dance review that was about a dance in a strip club!”

Her fellow critic, Ken Herman said “I’m glad they recognize the Tan Dun oratorio  is actually a really earth shattering work and they actually did it in a place like this,” about his 2nd place win in the “Daily Newspaper or Website: Reviews: Arts & Entertainment” for his review “Riveting “Water Passion” at SummerFest”.
