Placid Pops Opening Saved by Spectacular Singers

Friday afternoon, before I left home to go down to Embarcadero Marina Park South to attend the San Diego Symphony’s season-opening Pops Concert, I was reading New Yorker music critic Alex Ross’s current account of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Describing that orchestra’s summer outdoor concerts in varying venues across the borough, Ross focused on one in Bedford-Stuyvesant that he described as “an avant garde hip-hop pops concert” that featured guest performers Leslie Uggams and hip-hop artist Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def). Call it a rare opportunity.  San Diego dancer Trystan Loucado is on tour in Europe with Les Ballets TROCKADERO de Monte Carlo. Legally Blonde The Musical at Moonlight Stage Productions

Legally Blonde The Musical may be the newest work in the Moonlight Stage Productions summer season (the others: Fiddler on the Roof, Anything Goes, and Sweeney Todd, are all at least 30 years old), but it certainly comes pre-sold. The 2001 film on which it was based is a staple for TV viewers, and its girrrl power message resonates with the audience demographic that made Wicked such a huge hit.
