August Wilson’s 10-play ‘Pittsburgh Cycle’ of life by the decade in a 20th Century Pittsburgh ghetto is more than only an African-American masterpiece. As indicated by the triumphant post-Broadway tour of ‘Jitney,’ the lesser-known 1970s play now at the Old Globe, Wilson belongs among the masters of the American drama.
Fresh. Vital. These are not words I expected to use for the Martha Graham Dance Company’s performance at the Civic Theatre on Wednesday. … What a happy surprise, then, to see the exciting show the Graham company did here, performed by dancers who seemed enraptured by this work.
Lamb’s Players Theatre loves a good story – and they’ve been specializing in dramatizing them since their early days as a company. They’ve found another one to tell, and the result is a veritable banquet for the imagination and the soul…
Given societal changes, it would take a good deal of finesse to make “Italian American Reconciliation” work as a contemporary story. The Scripps Ranch production hadn’t found that finesse as of opening night.
