Friday, May 21, 2021, turned out to be a red letter day for the San Diego Symphony. In the morning, the orchestra unveiled four months of pops and classical orchestra programming it will present at the new Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, and Friday evening the organization released online the first San Diego Symphony concert, with Music Director Rafael Payare conducting, from this new venue on San Diego Bay.

Sunday afternoon, SummerFest Music Director Inon Barnatan matched Claude Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun” and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s virtuoso, arch-Romantic Sonata in G Minor for Piano and Cello, Op. 19, with George Crumb’s rarely performed 1971 “Vox Balaenae” (“Voice of the Whale”) for amplified flute, cello and piano, and Maurice Ravel’s “Trois poèmes de Stéphane Mallarmé.”
