Story
Tennessee Williams may have learned much from this castrating mother. Under the banner of protection, she smothers; her rigid rankings allow no appeal. Williams reduced the cast and milked the subtleties more precisely but Priestley’s creation is just as brutal and even more clueless. Her smug cruelty is breath-catching, the monstrous consequences all too sadly foretold.
Dance events are wonderfully strange and varied flowers in a “pick your own” garden. Dozens of troupes are presenting dance-theater spiced up with live music, spoken word, puppetry, and art installations. Productions may be fresh and colorful or prickly and dark. You may find a few strange weeds among the flowers – and weeds can be fascinating.
You took your chances in the mid-19th century as you settled the American West, where pestilence and pain undeniably held sway. Lamb’s Players Theatre’s ‘Quilters’ is a vivid reminder of the era’s survivors, namely a family of pioneer women whose central artifact was bigger than all of them.
