When they realized that the ship with their costumes and sets was still somewhere in the Atlantic, they ran out to a mall in Dallas, their first U.S. stop, and bought what they needed to stage three less elaborate pieces. The French company didn’t disappoint … though gray buckets, used a makeshift props in one dance, suggested that after the show, they were going to do some spackling.
The father-daughter connection can be as roily as any other in the family, especially when the daughter’s a teen and is frightened to death of her own ethnicity. MOXIE Theatre’s ‘Lesson 443’ is a well-mounted piece to that effect, but the premise weakens against the solid understories.
Michelangelo sculptures, an entire Gothic cathedral made from plain aluminum crutches and huge tacky postcards are all part of an irreverent and provocative but definitely worth seeing exhibition titled “Seeing is Believing: A Reinvention of Articles of Faith” that was curated by 2013 San Diego Art Prize winners Debby and Larry Kline. Now on exhibit at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla, the exhibition is a very odd success due to amazing structure, overtly tacky kitsch, and spectacular failure… (read more…)
