Thompson Musical are specific and intentional, told through the life story and experiences (real or fabricated) of the infamous titular Gonzo journalist himself. The production, a world premiere with music and lyrics by Joe Iconis and book by Joe Iconis and Gregory S. Moss, catches the wild ride that is Thompson’s career and pairs it with a vibrant rock score. The musical runs at La Jolla Playhouse through October 8.

Time Stands Still Sneaks Up on You

“Time stands still” is an oxymoron, something inherently contradictory. Time, of course, is always progressing, though in the eye of the beholder time can seem to stand still under extreme conditions.

How people react to extreme conditions is a major theme of Donald Margulies’ multilayered relationship play, performing through March 17 at North Coast Repertory Theatre. But, “relationship” as a topic for drama turns out to be an oxymoron as well.
