Globe Goes Gloomy for Shakespeare

By Welton Jones | July 3, 2012 |

The Old Globe’s summer Shakespeare repertory is set in a drab, Eastern European world of bullies and bloodshed. “As You Like It” manages to detach and float free, spreading its serene glories as a unique theatrical masterpiece. But “Richard III” remains bogged down in the loathsome blight of its hypnotic title character. That one genius could have created, four centuries ago, both this Rosalind and this Richard celebrates again the mysteries of art. Lindsay Posner’s staging of “Richard III” concentrates exclusively on  the title role, a part that always has fascinated audiences with its ranting malevolence. There are a few…

Marvin Hamlisch Conducting

Friday afternoon, before I left home to go down to Embarcadero Marina Park South to attend the San Diego Symphony’s season-opening Pops Concert, I was reading New Yorker music critic Alex Ross’s current account of the Brooklyn Philharmonic. Describing that orchestra’s summer outdoor concerts in varying venues across the borough, Ross focused on one in Bedford-Stuyvesant that he described as “an avant garde hip-hop pops concert” that featured guest performers Leslie Uggams and hip-hop artist Yasiin Bey (formerly known as Mos Def). He plans to return to San…

Legally Blonde The Musical at Moonlight Stage Productions

By Bill Eadie | June 28, 2012 |

Legally Blonde The Musical may be the newest work in the Moonlight Stage Productions summer season (the others: Fiddler on the Roof, Anything Goes, and Sweeney Todd, are all at least 30 years old), but it certainly comes pre-sold. Still, the Broadway version didn’t recoup its investment despite a healthy run, and while a national tour continues the show hasn’t done as well at later stops as it did…
