In general, audiences see Stephen Sondheim shows to be entranced by Mr. Sondheim’s clever lyrics and to hear how he pushes the envelope as he sets those lyrics to music. The books of Mr. Sondheim’s shows, which are always written by others, tend to be considered the weak link when compared to the score. So, it is quite a reversal to see Sean Murray’s production of Company at Cygnet Theatre push the humor of George Furth’s book to the foreground. The result is the funniest Company imaginable, though perhaps made so at the expense of the music…
On paper, Perfect Wedding does not sound like a very satisfying comedy. Reading a plot synopsis beforehand makes the play seem like a painfully corny experience that is dull and unoriginal.
A review of “Gems of the Medici” now on view at the Bowers Museum in Santa Ana. The exhibition features carved gems, medallions, and gold amassed by the Medici—Renaissance Italy’s most famous and powerful family. The exhibition features important ancient cameos from the Hellenistic and Roman eras along with spectacular gems made during the Renaissance and Baroque periods.
On the last day of the San Diego Fringe Festival, there’s still one more chance to see “Oyster Boy” (today at 5 p.m.) and “The Desperate Characters of Mercer County” (6:30 p.m.), both at Space 4 Art. Both shows have their charms, for instance, the Greek/Hawaiian chorus in “Oyster Boy.”
