Cygnet’s fair ‘Maple and Vine’ stumbles over itself

Technology has made the 1950s seem like centuries ago, and a lot more may (or may not) have happened to human interconnectedness in the meantime. Cygnet Theatre’s “Maple and Vine” takes a look at the simpler era and the very personal reasons behind the characters’ fascination with it — but amid the nice production values and fine acting, the script fuels a debate in which the playwright doesn’t want to take part.

Promoting a concert that featured two symphony orchestras playing together on the same stage conjured the image of a circus barker luring patrons into a tent to see the bearded lady or a two-headed dog. Fortunately, under the baton of guest conductor Pinchas Zukerman, the combined performance of the San Diego Symphony and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra easily provided an unusually powerful, moving account of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E Minor.
