What a delightful frolic the San Diego International Fringe Festival offers, in hundreds of spread over a dozen venues for a couple of weeks. Reminds me of another festival which struggled along in its early days but later turned out to be quite impressive. Hmmmm, let’s see. What was that name? A combative scene made me think of “West Side Story,” and the chorus sections are stunning, with interesting new moves coming lickety-split, and the fine dancers staying tight as can be. It’s “Solo y Juntos,” Celeste Lanuza Dance Company’s passionate tribute to dance legend Jose Limon, and it’s got everything–dance, a live band ….
There is one fully set dance that can’t be unseen. Semi-clothed women wrestle with wedding gowns and do the hokey pokey with foam cones, the kind you find at a craft store. They march while holding them at their crotches, which is very crafty and suggests…
Yesterday was Frida Kahlo’s birthday, and what a perfect day to see the visually rich “Cuentos” at the San Diego International Fringe Festival. Another show not to miss–“Burning on the River,” by the Cleveland Dance Exchange.
